Will the Writing Center correct my paper?

The University Writing Center is not a proofreading or editing service, but we can teach you to be a better editor of your own work and point out trouble spots in your writing. In the end, you are the writer and you will make your own corrections. To revise an old cliché: proofread a paper, one may succeed for a day. Teach a student to proofread, one can succeed for a lifetime of writing.

When is the best time to bring in my paper?

Right now! The sooner that we see a paper, the more chances that we can have to improve your writing. Multiple sessions with multiple tutors on the same paper can result in very effective revision.

I have a blank screen and don’t know where to begin. What should I do?

Come to the writing center. We can help you to think about ideas and develop a writing plan even if you’re starting from scratch.

Can I bring my friend’s/spouse’s/roommate’s paper?

No. The student writer must bring his or her own work to the University Writing Center. We have morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours to accommodate most schedules. Since students are always in control of their own writing, writers must be there to discuss their needs, goals, and intention.

Can you get me the grade I need in my class?

Students need good grades for many reasons: scholarship requirements, professional aspirations, and personal satisfaction. However, the writing center tutors work to improve writing and cannot guarantee outcomes in class. However, well-written papers that have gone through multiple drafts and careful editing tend to score higher than those that have not.

Can you recommend a course for improving my writing?

The University Writing Program offers dozens of courses to improve student writing. Students generally begin in WRTG 1010 or 2010, but can take courses in writing for the arts and humanities, writing in the social sciences, professional and technical writing, business writing, science writing, grammar and editing or writing for publication. Writing courses are available for both undergraduate and graduate students in all programs. See the University of Utah General Catalogue or the UWP website for full descriptions.
